In short
Trivia Quest is playable without an account, and most of what it knows about you never leaves your phone.
Your coins, lifelines, unlocked difficulties and settings are stored on your device only. Nothing is uploaded unless you choose to do something that sends it — putting a score on the leaderboard, reporting a question, or suggesting a category.
We do not ask for your email address, phone number, contacts, photos or location. The app has no login.
What stays on your device
The following is stored on your phone and is never transmitted to us:
- Coins, lifelines and unlocked difficulties
- Your daily challenge and its progress
- Settings, onboarding state, and whether you have rated the app
- The last name you typed into the leaderboard, so you do not have to retype it
Deleting the app deletes all of it. There is no backup of it on our side and no way for us to restore it.
What you send us, and only when you choose to
Three actions in the app send data to our server. Each one is something you tap deliberately:
- Claim Your Spot on the results screen sends the name you type, your score, how many answers were correct, the category and difficulty played, and when you played. The name is free text — if you type your real name it becomes publicly visible on the leaderboard, so use whatever you are comfortable with others seeing.
- Report a Question sends the question text, its answer options, the reason you selected, any details you write, and optionally a name if you enter one.
- Suggest a Category sends the category name you propose and, optionally, a name if you enter one.
If you never use these features, the app never sends any of this.
What is collected automatically
On first launch the app registers itself with our server so that submissions can be signed, so the app can tell which leaderboard entries are yours, and so abuse can be limited. Registration sends:
- A random identifier generated on your device the first time the app runs. It is not your advertising ID, not your device serial number, and not derived from any hardware identifier. Reinstalling the app produces a new one.
- Whether you are on iOS or Android, and the app version.
When you submit a score, our server records a shortened form of the network address your request arrived from. The part that identifies an individual connection is removed before it is stored, leaving only enough to tell whether a flood of submissions came from one network. It is never shown on the leaderboard, never returned by any part of the app, and is not used to work out where you are — nothing in the app or on the server looks up a location from an address.
The leaderboard uses that same identifier to show you which entries are your own, so the app can mark your row and let you share it. It is matched on the server against the identifier your app registered with, never on the display name you chose — two players can pick the same name, and matching on it would show you somebody else's result as yours.
If you enable notifications, the app sends a push token so that notifications can reach your device. Turning notifications off in your system settings stops this.
Analytics and crash reporting
We use Google Firebase for analytics and crash reporting. This records how the app is used — quizzes started and finished, lifelines used, screens viewed, ads watched — along with device type, operating system version and app version.
The name you enter for the leaderboard is deliberately not sent to analytics. Only its length, and whether it was left blank, are recorded, so that we can see how many players skip naming themselves without collecting the names themselves.
Crash reports include the state of the app at the moment it failed, which helps us fix bugs. They do not include the contents of your game or anything you typed.
Advertising
Trivia Quest shows one kind of ad: an optional rewarded video that appears after a wrong answer, offering to continue. Watching it is always your choice — declining shows a free Skip Challenge button instead. There are no banner ads and no ads between screens.
Ads are provided by Google AdMob, which may use device and advertising identifiers to select what to show.
On iOS, the system asks your permission to track before any of this happens. If you decline, ads still work but are not personalized.
On Android, and for everyone in the EEA and the UK, Google's consent form decides what may be used. If you do not consent, ads are requested as non-personalized.
You can change these choices at any time: on iOS in Settings › Privacy & Security › Tracking, and on Android in Settings › Google › Ads, as well as through the privacy options in the app's own settings where your region requires it.
Who else receives data
We send data to two Google services and to no one else. We do not sell your data, and we do not share it with data brokers.
- Google Firebase — analytics, crash reporting and notification delivery.
- Google AdMob — advertising.
Their handling of it is governed by Google's own policies:
Everything else — your leaderboard entries, question reports and category suggestions — goes to a server we operate ourselves and is not passed on to anyone.
Where data is kept, and for how long
Submissions are stored in a database on a server we rent and administer ourselves, located in Singapore and reachable only by us. Traffic between the app and the server is encrypted with HTTPS.
If you are in the United Kingdom or the European Economic Area, this means the data described above leaves your region. What is transferred is limited to what this policy lists — the name you choose to type, your score, and the contents of a report or suggestion you choose to send — and we do not pass it on to anyone else.
Leaderboard entries, reports and suggestions are kept until you or we delete them. Database backups are kept for fourteen days and then deleted automatically.
We should be plain about one thing: the database is protected by access controls and network isolation, not by encryption of the stored data itself. Please treat the leaderboard as public, because it is.
Deleting your data
Settings › Delete Personal Data removes the leaderboard entries submitted from your current installation of the app. It takes effect immediately.
Two limits are worth knowing, because they are not obvious:
- It can only reach entries submitted from the installation you are using now. If you deleted and reinstalled the app, entries from before that cannot be matched to you automatically.
- Entries carried over from the app's previous leaderboard, before it moved to our own server, have no device associated with them at all.
In either case, email ryan.myo.han@gmail.com with the player name and we will remove them by hand.
To remove everything held on your device, delete the app.
Children
Trivia Quest is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them.
If you are a parent or guardian and believe a child under 13 has sent us information — most likely a name typed into the leaderboard — email ryan.myo.han@gmail.com and we will delete it.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to see what data we hold about you, to have it corrected, to have it deleted, to receive a copy of it, and to object to how it is used. These rights apply under the GDPR in the UK and EEA, and under the CCPA and CPRA in California, among others.
For most people the in-app Delete Personal Data option is the fastest route. For anything else, email ryan.myo.han@gmail.com and we will respond within 30 days.
Because the app has no account system, the only thing that links data to you is the player name you chose and the installation you used. Please include the player name in any request, or we may not be able to find the right entries.
We do not sell personal information, and we do not use it to make automated decisions about you.
Changes to this policy
If we change how the app handles data, we will update this page and the date at the top. Significant changes will also be noted in the app's release notes.
The current version of this policy is always available at https://heartbeatlab.foundation/apps/triviaquest/privacy.html.
